10.

Jake had been so excited after their late afternoon and early evening at Alexander’s house and he had talked about it none stop for the rest of the weekend and into the following week. Piper had been so pleased it had gone well, and when she and Alexander had said goodbye at the end of the driveway when he had dropped them at home, she had managed to get sneaky little kiss while Jake was busy dashing up the drive to Fiona.

It had been torture saying goodbye to Alexander, but they both knew they had to be strong. Piper had a big week ahead, and it was time for the salon to open properly. She was going to be putting all her time into finalizing the details for the opening night, making sure her marketing materials were all going out around town in good time, and of course ensuring the place looked as good as it possibly could.

Alexander had been there on hand to help, but an emergency with his own work had meant he hadn’t been able to be there as much as he said he wanted to be, and now she was worried about him too. She hoped the pressures of being in position among his pack weren’t building up too much.

She looked around the salon and at all she had managed to achieve in the past few weeks. She had taken a completely dull and empty white space and turned it into something funky and fresh. The back wall was an electric pink with a big, blue neon sign reading Piper’s Paradise, one of the adjoining walls was covered in deep blue and emerald green tropical wallpaper, and the lush, potted ferns and other lighting really made the place pop. It was like somewhere you would find in the city, and Alexander assured her it was definitely going to overtake all the smaller salons that mainly catered for the older ladies of Lone Reach.

“You’ve brought something here for the people our age,” he had told her. “And some of the younger girls, it’s going to be great.”

Piper had also decided to host pamper parties for both women and children, wanting to seize on something she had seen happening around places back in the city where girls from the ages of five and up had their birthday parties in a salon, having their nails done, sipping on mocktails and munching on candy and listening to some fun music. Lone Reach definitely didn’t have anything like that, and she had already managed to advertise it around Jake’s pre-school and had plenty of positive feedback.

She stood and leaned back against the main desk, looking out over the salon, and smiling.

“Piper’s Paradise,” she said aloud. “You look wonderful.”

She checked the time and saw that it was approaching 1pm, and she knew Alexander was coming to see how she had pulled everything together at the last moment. She smiled as she saw him jogging across the street with two take out coffees in his hand and a brown paper bag.
